Arnaud Kalimuendo Strikes as Forest Earn Sentimental Victory Over Malmö

“Champions of Europe, you’ll never sing that,” was chanted through the City Ground as Forest supporters celebrated a further win against their Swedish opponents. A great deal has occurred since Trevor Francis’s winning header clinched the continental trophy in 1979, but the club still cherish those memories. Similarly, major changes have taken place in the weeks since Sean Dyche assumed control, with Forest looking reinvigorated and securing a convincing win courtesy of goals from Kalimuendo, Ryan Yates, and Milenkovic, enhancing their prospects of advancing in the European competition.

Building Steam with Another Straight Victory

For Forest, this performance – against a Malmö side that had been inactive for almost three weeks after finishing in sixth place in their home competition – represented a third straight win across every tournament and added to the momentum generated from the previous week's stunning victory at Anfield. While this match was a reminder of the club's European Cup success in spirit, the encounter itself was devoid of any significant jeopardy or jitters.

This was an occasion filled with nostalgia, an eagerly awaited meeting and the third competitive meeting between the sides since the showpiece event 46 years ago.

Forest leaned into the history, honoring the heroes of 1979 by providing them, along with their visiting opponents, the VIP welcome. 13 members of the Malmö's team from that time were also in attendance. Both teams enjoyed a meal together prior to the match. Frank Clark, Colin Barrett and their teammates were given a tumultuous reception when they gathered on the pitch a quarter of an hour before kick-off, and a characteristically superb display was shown in the home stand.

Remembering History

“30th May 1979, Robertson crossed it in from the left flank,” displayed half of a giant banner, in block capitals. While no one required a reminder of what ensued, the rest was unfurled as the squads emerged from the dressing rooms. “There is Francis,” it stated. A second stunning tifo depicted Clough watching events beside his right-hand man Taylor on a dugout at the Olympiastadion.

Control from the Outset

So, the hosts had soaked up those wonderful recollections, but what about the performance on the evening? It was impressive, as well. They were in full command from the moment Kalimuendo fired an attempt wide inside two minutes and built a 2-0 lead by the break. Domínguez sent an early header wide and then Abbott, on his first European start, had a go.

It seemed appropriate that Ryan Yates, who joined Forest aged eight, made the initial breakthrough in the Malmö defence led by their own academy product captain, Pontus Jansson, previously of Leeds United and Brentford. The home centre-back Milenkovic saw a cross deflect off a opponent and into the pathway of the midfielder, who finished with his right foot from just inside the box to score his maiden strike since last March.

Another Strike Seals Control

The scorer was involved in Forest’s second goal on the brink of half-time, as well, his unmarked header saved by the shot-stopper Melker Ellborg but the alert forward on hand to tap in the loose ball from close range. James McAtee, the midfielder handed a rare start and just his second appearance since September, was the catalyst, chipping a delicious ball towards his teammate at the back post.

A minute earlier, Hudson-Odoi’s low effort was turned wide off the defender Colin Rösler, the son of former Manchester City forward Uwe Rösler, and an unmarked the defender also previously had a powerful header instinctively repelled by the keeper, who was back in place of the ex- Aston Villa goalie Robin Olsen.

Malmö’s Difficulties

This was the Swedish side's initial game since the Swedish Allsvenskan ended on 9 November, and they struggled to match Forest’s energy. The Reds made it 3-0 when the defender scored after his defensive colleague Murillo headed back a corner. Yates had a volley stopped, but the Serbian defender Milenkovic pounced on the leftovers.

The home side then went for the jugular, with Hudson-Odoi chipping a right-foot shot on to the crossbar before Sangaré sent an optimistic effort wide from distance. It was one of those nights. Dyche, mindful of Sunday’s domestic fixture here against Brighton, implemented multiple alterations from the side that stunned Liverpool at their ground recently, when they also scored three goals, though he introduced substitutes and further fresh legs midway through the second half.

Hiccup-Free Evening for the Team

It turned out to be a hiccup-free night for Forest. The coach could withdraw the defender with the match long since boxed off and subsequently brought on teenage defender Sinclair for his first-team debut. Dyche talked about the Forest old guard providing “bits of gold” at weekly get-togethers and, nearly fifty years on, the present squad demonstrated they are able of producing of excitement, as well.
