Harvard ex-president Summers Steps Down from OpenAI Board
Ex-Treasury chief Lawrence Summers is departing from the governing body at the ChatGPT creator, just a week after a batch of digital correspondence between him and notorious criminal the disgraced billionaire became widely known.
Summers stated in a statement that he was "grateful for the privilege to have served, optimistic about the prospects of the company, and anticipate tracking their advancement".
The prominent academic, who once presided over the prestigious university, announced on Monday that he would be scaling back from public commitments due to his connections with the convicted sex offender.
Digital Correspondence
The recently released emails revealed that Summers communicated with Epstein until the 24 hours preceding his 2019 detention for suspected human trafficking of minors.
In additional comments, the artificial intelligence company stated it respected his determination to depart.
"We acknowledge his numerous inputs and the insight he brought to the directors," the organization remarked.
Congressional Action
This development arrives after the two houses of Congress decided on recently to pass a measure that would mandate the Department of Justice to make public its documents on Epstein.
The legislation will afterward head to the office of US President Donald Trump for approval. He has said he plans to sign the legislation, after changing his view on the matter following pushback from his supporters.
Correspondence Findings
A batch of Epstein-related correspondence disclosed by the Congressional committee recently included several well-known personalities in the Epstein's past associates, without suggesting any criminal activity by those figures.
The emails indicated that Summers and Jeffrey Epstein regularly had dinners together, with he often attempting to introduce the official to prominent international personalities.

After the messages were shared with the public, he expressed he took "complete accountability for my misguided choice to continue communicating with Jeffrey Epstein".

The economist held senior posts under Democratic administrations; acting as treasury secretary under the former president, and as leader of the economic advisory body under President Obama.
He headed the university from 2001 to 2006 and continues to be a faculty member there. When stating his departure from public roles earlier on Monday, he said he would maintain his educational duties.

Following his declaration on earlier this week, the Center for American Progress, a left-leaning research organization in the capital where Summers was a prominent member, verified that the economist was ceased to be connected with the institution.
He became part of the board of the AI company, which makes the AI chatbot, in 2023 - following a unsuccessful effort to oust its chief executive Sam Altman.
